Tech @ Home w/Ashley

Roses are red, violets are blue… your old electronics deserve some love too! Not sure what to do with that old desktop computer or that VCR from ’96? Don’t throw it in the trash! Technology evolves quickly and is rapidly replaced, too. So many people ask me how they should dispose of outdated devices that they no longer use. Here are my suggestions:

If the tech is usable and relevant, but you have just upgraded:

Sell it online for cash or store credit.

  • Amazon and Apple have online trade-in programs where you send them your old devices and receive gift cards for new purchases.

  • Websites like Itsworthmore.com and gazelle.com are other terrific options for electronics of various brands. They will pay you in cash for your used electronics.

Donate it!

  • Offer the device to a family member or friend: Older devices make great options for first devices for younger kids or older adults.

  • Provide a computer to a local student in need: Sage Sustainable Electronics has partnered with Columbus City Schools to provide students with computers. www.sagese.com/ccs-donate

If the tech is not operable or painfully out of date (I’m looking at you, floppy disks), recycle them for free locally via drop-off or online at the following locations:

If the device has a hard drive, these businesses clean it before reusing or recycling its components. Of course, you can also clean your hard drive before donating for added peace of mind. With over 50 million tons of electronic goods being thrown away worldwide every year, reusing or recycling your tech is the better choice for you and the environment.

Let the purging begin!
