New Ways to Celebrate Valentine's Day

As we focus on love in the month of February I think it’s important to talk about the different types of love and fun unique ways to express it.

Eros: This is the type of love you have for your spouse, partner or a person you are intimate with. Instead of the typical dinner and a movie, think about a scavenger hunt with clues to get to know each other, take a love language test, create a drink together and name it something that represents your relationship. If you need something a little more spicy, paint together but get imaginative with the canvas.

Philia: love of friends and equals. A handmade gift can fortify this type of love- put pictures in a handmade frame, make a funny video about how you became friends or put together a time capsule. This type of love thrives on memories and sentiment.

Storge: love of parents for children. Make your child a collage with hearts and all the reasons why you love them. Make a poster board that has words of affirmation. Teach them different ways to express love.

Agape: love of mankind. This is one of my favorites. In today’s world, so many people feel unloved. Take this opportunity to flood a shelter with cards or inexpensive treats with written words of affirmation. Collect socks, gloves and hats and pass them out to those in need. Find a free pantry and put some chocolate or meals with notes of encouragement!

Everybody wants to be seen, everybody wants to know that they matter. Don’t stop at Valentine’s Day take time to intentionally show love to the people you care about twelve months out of the year. Valentine’s Day is only one day: feeling loved is something we can hold onto forever.
